those of use here in the US that are regular wage slaves monday to friday are starting a nice three day weekend today as its labor day on monday. so it seems appropriate to talk about my Spanish Holiday Remix of Jane’s Addiction’s Jane Says. if i were to take a guess, it was most likely last worked on sometime in 1999 or 2000. at the time i no longer had any gear to my name except for my trusty blue and white g3, cubase 4, and rebirth. i think i use to have some screenshots somewhere of what it looked like, but finding those in the archives is going to take a long time and honestly i’d rather do something else.
in terms of where i sourced the audio, the bulk of the samples were pulled from the version of Jane Says on Kettle Whistle. it was the first quality recording i had of the longer intro that i typically heard on bootlegs. those bootlegs provided the vocal samples of perry for the ending (“you’re all fucking crazy”). a lot of the portions in it have the intro guitar played backwards (or it alternates with one playing forward in one ear and backwards in the other). i would say that i’d probably go in and surgically remove a couple parts where it repeats a phrase (such as “like them anyways” around the five minute mark and “she can’t hit” around 6 minutes). in fact i’ve felt that way for years, i’ve just never bothered. many of the repeats would say as my whole intent was to stretch it into something that would be a good track for a dj set. now ten years later, there’s a lot more that i’d probably do, but at the time i was limited: no gear and no money or desire to purchase lots of software. rebirth didn’t offer a lot either since its just “emulating” classic roland gear: a pair of 303s, and 808 and a 909. i did use one of the rebirth mods and pushed things through effects quite a few effects. i can hear some phasing due to the reverb and delays on the drums and the original beat in the song.
in retrospect it would probably have been a better choice to use any other track from Jane’s Addition due to its popularity. that popularity though doesn’t translate to any amount of web traffic despite it being available online continuously since i finished it. maybe that’s cause its total crap. i don’t think so, but then again no one thinks their kid is ugly until they are a teenager.

naked lunch comes to mind when looking at your picture =]
